Since aerogel felt is a special material, ordinary workers may not have seen it before. Special attention should be paid to the two core points of “hydrophobicity” and “dust protection” during construction .
Construction Guidelines for Aerogel Felt Window Frames/Cold Bridge Areas
1. Preparations (Protection First)
- Protective measures : Aerogel powder is extremely fine and absorbent; contact with skin can cause dryness and a rough feel. Construction workers must wear masks (N95 recommended) , goggles , and latex gloves .
- Cutting tools : Prepare a large utility knife and a long ruler.
- Base requirements : The cement base at the junction of the windowsill and the wall must be flat, firm, free of dust and oil stains.
2. Cutting and Pre-laying
- Precise measurement : Cut the aerogel felt according to the depth of the window frame (usually 10-20 cm ) to minimize joints.
- Pre-laying : Place the cut strips along the edge of the window frame to ensure that the corners are flat.
3. Adhesive application (key step)
Note: Aerogel is extremely hydrophobic and must never be directly bonded with cement mortar!
- Adhesive selection : Nail-free adhesive, modified polyurethane structural adhesive , or special aerogel adhesive must be used .
- Adhesive application method : Apply adhesive to the back of the aerogel felt using a “dot bonding” or “strip bonding” method, and press it evenly onto the cement base.
- Fixing : After compaction, if the surface rebounds, it can be fixed with construction tape or temporary wooden strips for 12 hours.
4. Surface corner protection and leveling
- Install corner protectors : Plastic corner protectors must be installed at the corners of the window frame to protect the aerogel from being flattened and to facilitate subsequent plastering.
- Interface treatment : Since the aerogel surface does not absorb water, applying putty directly will cause it to peel off. It is essential to first apply a layer of interface agent (or adhesive backing) to the aerogel surface , or apply a full layer of fiber mesh , before proceeding with the subsequent putty application.
5. Acceptance Criteria
- Flatness : There is no obvious wobbling when touched, and it fits tightly with the window frame and wall.
- Coverage : Ensure that the aerogel is completely covered by the subsequent topcoat (putty or latex paint) without any white showing.
💡 Tips to Avoid Pitfalls
- Do not wet the surface with water : If the worker has a habit of wetting the wall with water, please stop him. Although water will not damage the aerogel, it will prevent the adhesive from bonding properly.
- Do not over-compress : Aerogel relies on nanopores for insulation, so do not compress it too much when nailing the insulation nails. Maintaining its original thickness will achieve the best effect.
- Sealing : If there are gaps at the edges of the window frame, fill them with expanding foam first, cut them flat, and then apply aerogel.
